Margaret Beaumont: Watery chaos, war in heaven and a cackling goose - creation legends of the Ancient Near East

Though they share many elements, the creation legends of Egypt and its neighbours are as diverse as the cultures themselves, and often show signs of development or change over the millennia. As power and control moved between the varied cultures of the region, a constant need to define their view of the world and its origin remained, often reflecting the current political reality. This talk will aim to present an overview of the many and varied creation themes.

Margaret is Honorary Treasurer of AEMES and a regular speaker at its events. She has a particular interest in the common themes and the diversities of Ancient Near Eastern cults. and institutions , and their influence on later Western thought. She holds the Certificate in Egyptology from the University of Manchester. Margaret works as an Occupational Therapist in local government Community Services.

12:45 Lunch (included) followed by:

Campbell Price: "His Image as Perfect as the Ancestors": Archaism in Late Period Egyptian Sculpture

The art of the Egyptian Late Period (c. 750-30 BC) is still often overlooked as a pale imitation of earlier times. Artistic evidence, especially in the form of statues, is well-attested from this period but still under-appreciated. New styles were combined with conscious emulations of the past to produce a dynamic new repertoire, illustrating how aware Late Period Egyptians were of their rich artistic inheritance.

Campbell gained his B.A. and M.A. in Egyptology from Liverpool University, where he has recently completed his Ph.D on Late Period sculpture from the Karnak Cachette. He is currently the Curatorial Assistant for the University's Garstang Museum of Archaeology, and Project Assistant for the Association of Curators for Collections from Egypt and Sudan. He has also been a member of the Saqqara Geophysical Survey Project since 2006.
