Narrative in Assyrian Art by Debbie Miller

We are all familiar with the “masterpieces” of Assyrian art – the lion-hunt reliefs of Ashurbanipal – but what about the poorly preserved reliefs on the White Obelisk? Although considering later themes depicted on reliefs in the Assyrian palaces, this talk will concentrate on this early example of narrative within Assyrian art.

Debbie has been a member of AEMES for a number of years and is currently the Journal and Website Editor. She is a graduate with a BA (Hons) in Literature & History and a qualified adult/further education teacher who now works within the Special Needs Department of a local secondary school. Having a particular interest in the international relations of the ancient Near East, she is regular speaker for AEMES and has spoken to other local societies.

12:45 Lunch (included) followed by:

Pharaohs and Nomarchs of Middle Kingdom Egypt by George Hart

This lecture will focus on the reigns and monuments of the pharaohs of Middle Kingdom Egypt during Dynasties XI – XII, and examine the vivid wall paintings in the tombs of the governors at Beni Hassan on the west bank of the Nile in Middle Egypt.

George holds degrees in Classics and in Egyptian Art and Archaeology from UCL. He joined the staff of the British Museum in 1973 where he was Principal Lecturer on the antiquities collections from Egypt, Greece, the Levant and civilisations of the Mediterranean World, and ran courses at the Museum on Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs. He was Chairman of the Friends of the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology for the first twelve years following its foundation in 1988, and was a Committee Member of the Egypt Exploration Society for a number of years, most recently from 2003 – 2006. In 2009 he was elected as a Trustee of the EES in its new administrative organization, and is an Editorial Advisor on its bulletin “Egyptian Archaeology.” He has been a regular Guest Lecturer on Nile cruises and also on the Mediterranean and Red Sea and serves on the panel of accredited lecturers for the National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts (NADFAS.) In 2004 George took early retirement from the British Museum after a career there of 31 years, in order to devote more time to writing. His publications include: Pharaohs and Pyramids: a Guide through Old Kingdom Egypt; Dictionary of Egyptian Gods and Goddesses, and Egyptian Myths.
