Margaret Beaumont: Goddesses Behaving Badly
In the Christian
tradition, holy females have been revered for their gentleness, modesty
and chastity. While some of these characteristics
can be found among the attributes of a number of divine females of the
Ancient Middle East, others were very different. Seduction, violence, drunkeness,
low cunning and petty mindedness are among their less admirable behaviours.
Sometimes a deity could behave in an all too human manner. Myths from our
area of study show that at times the female of the divine species could indeed
be deadlier than the male.
Margaret is Honorary Treasurer of AEMES and a regular speaker at its events.
She has a particular interest in the common themes and the diversities of
Ancient Near Eastern cults and institutions, and their influence on later
Western thought. She holds the Certificate in Egyptology from the University
of Manchester. Margaret works as an Occupational Therapist in local government
Community Services.
12:45 Lunch (included) followed by:
Garry Shaw: The Daily Life of the Pharaohs
In this lecture, through the inscriptions of courtiers and kings, administrative documents, the work of classical writers, and the remains of palaces, details of the daily lives of the pharaohs will be brought to light. Many questions will be addressed, such as how did the king spend his mornings? What did he wear? Where did he eat? How involved was he in political decisions? And did he fight alongside his troops when on campaign? In this manner the reality of being pharaoh will be highlighted, as opposed to his idealised role as eternally perfect defender of the order.
Garry studied at the University of Liverpool (where he also taught Egyptian history) and subsequently published his first book Royal Authority in Egypt's Eighteenth Dynasty. Since then he has taught at the American University in Cairo, published articles in the JEA (Journal of Egyptian Archaeology) and JARCE (Journal of the American Research Centre in Egypt), the latter involving a new interpretation of the evidence surrounding Seqenenre Tao's death. Garry also had a book which came out in September on the Predynastic palettes in Manchester Museum and is the author of The Complete Pharaoh, which is planned for release later in 2012. He is the editor of a series of publications for Zahi Hawass, including the latest official guide to the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, and is the editor of Al-Rawi, Egypt's Heritage Review.
