AEMES "Lectures & Strawberry Lunch" Saturday 18th July 2009

Programme:

11.00 Tea/coffee on arrival followed by:

Heather Edwards: “The Life, relationships and companions of a Hapy god”

Hapy is the most “human” of the ancient Egyptian gods. Take away his godly beard and you are left with a portly old fisherman who has a food fixation. Despite his lowly appearance, Hapy’s role was crucial to Egypt’s prosperity. We will consider his position in the godly hierarchy and his relationship with his fellow gods.

Heather has visited Egypt at least 65 times and has travelled in most areas of the country as well as other areas of the Middle East. In 2001 she was awarded the Certificate in Egyptology at the University of Manchester. Heather has been an AEMES Committee Member for a number of years and is currently the Society Chairman.

Strawberry Lunch (included) followed by:

Victor Blunden: “Building a Pyramid – the Archaeological Evidence”

The pyramids of ancient Egypt have always fascinated the traveller. In this talk we look at some of the minor details still to be found at the pyramid sites, which perhaps shed some light on how these massive monuments were constructed. Make you own mind up about the theories - but the talk will give you something to look out for on your next visit.

Victor first travelled to Egypt in 1986 where he became fascinated by the culture of the Nile Valley. On his return he achieved a Distinction in the Certificate of Egyptology, a BA in Ancient History and Archaeology at Manchester University and an MA in Egyptian Archaeology at Liverpool University. He teaches Egyptology at Manchester University and lectures for the WEA. In 2004 he joined the team of “Ancient Egypt” magazine as an Editorial Assistant, and is now a columnist for the magazine. Victor is a Committee Member of the Egypt Exploration Society (Northern Branch).
